Metal Fillings Remain Common
During appointments, we’ll check the condition of aging restorations.
More and more dental offices choose only to offer tooth-colored fillings. However, traditional metal amalgams are still very much in use. Because they are so strong and durable, we frequently see patients with metal fillings that have lasted for several decades or more! Oftentimes, they are still in perfect condition. In other instances, they may be beginning to fail. If you have metal fillings, we’ll take extra time during your checkup to monitor their condition. Indeed, fillings of any kind may not be permanent. Proper oral hygiene at home, as well as regular checkups, will help ensure your filling remains in place for many years!
During an appointment, we first check the integrity of the filling itself to make sure it is strong and sturdy. Additionally, we look for any decay present around the edges of the restoration. If it’s been a while since your last checkup, we may recommend getting updated X-rays to better examine the health of your teeth and the condition of your existing fillings.
When it’s time to remove an old amalgam, we take special precautions to keep you safe. Because the mixture of metals contains mercury, we take great care to prevent exposure. Extra PPE, as well as ventilation and proper biohazard disposal, are just a few of the measures you may notice.
So whether it’s out of necessity due to a failed restoration, or simply to improve the appearance of your smile, please contact of office if you are interested in replacing your old metal fillings.
