Do You Need A Denture Reline?
If your dentures are painful or ill-fitting, you may need a denture reline.
When you received your first denture, you might have thought it was the last step in your dental journey. After all, what more can happen once you’ve replaced all your teeth? However, even after dentures, your mouth still experiences changes, and your dentures need a “tune-up” every so often. We call this a denture reline.
For dentures to work correctly, they need to maintain a tight fit. Dentures match the exact specifications of your mouth, and well-fitted dentures do not require messy gels or sticky strips to stay in place. Instead, they precisely correspond to the contours of your mouth and are held in place by suction alone.
In elderly patients especially, the ridge of bone that supports the dentures may experience resorption. This resorption is a common occurrence in cases of osteoporosis.
During an appointment for a denture reline, we’ll need to take an impression (or mold) of your mouth. We may also require an updated set of digital x-rays to monitor the underlying bone’s health. Depending on the extent of the adjustment you need, we might be able to perform the reline right while you wait in the office. In other cases, you’ll have to come back to pick up your denture at a later date.
